Watchdog: DoD Cybersecurity Needs Work

A recent report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) called attention to multiple cybersecurity weaknesses that should be addressed within the Department of Defense (DoD).

The [link url=”http://www.dodig.mil/pubs/documents/DODIG-2017-034.pdf” title=”OIG report”] summarized DoD cybersecurity issues during the time period of August 1, 2015, through July 31, 2016. The summary combined more than 20 different unclassified audits and reports, and found weaknesses in seven of eight critical cybersecurity metrics.

The summary included audits from both the General Accountability Office (GAO) and from within the DoD itself.

More than 130 recommendations not yet addressed

The OIG analysis concluded that during the time period analyzed, the DoD addressed and closed a total of 28 recommendations related to cybersecurity. But many more remain recommendation remain unaddressed.

In fact, there are 138 open cybersecurity-related recommendations that required management action. The report stressed that these recommendations be addressed in the near future.

“Correcting cybersecurity weaknesses and maintaining adequate cybersecurity is critical, as the DoD has become increasingly reliant on cyberspace to enable its military, intelligence, and business operations to perform the full spectrum of military operations. — [link url=”http://www.dodig.mil/pubs/documents/DODIG-2017-034.pdf” title=”OIG report”]

Nearly $35 billion to be spent in the next five years

According to the report, the DoD will invest $6.7 billion in cybersecurity in 2017 alone. Over the next five years, a total of $34.6 billion will be spent on cyber defense, as part of the Future Years Defense Program.

Despite a newfound focus on cybersecurity within the DoD in recent years, the OIG stated, “significant challenges remain” in the realm of cyber defense.
