Government hit with 77,000 cyber incidents in 2015
The U.S. government fought off more than 77,000 cyber incidents in 2015, according to a recent report from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
The OMB published its yearly Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) report, which detailed both cybersecurity performance and cybersecurity incident reporting.

A 10 percent year-over-year increase
Data analysis revealed that the U.S. government fended off a total of 77,183 cyber incidents in 2015, which represents an approximate 10 percent rise from 69,851 incidents a year earlier in 2014. The 2015 total also represents a 27 percent increase from 60,753 incidents two years earlier, in 2013.
According to the OMB, the observed increase in number of incidents not only represents an obvious rise in cybersecurity events, but it also signifies a growing overall capability “to identify, detect, manage, respond to, and recover from” the incidents.

Categorization of attacks
The OMB report broke down reported cybersecurity incidents by category, and the “other” category took the spot by a wide margin — 25,675 of 77,183 (33 percent) of events ended up being classified as “other.”
This speaks to the growing diversity and complexity of modern cyber attacks, as the “other” category included incidents such as unconfirmed third-party notifications, failed brute force attempts, and port scans.
