Ukraine claims that it has evidence that Russian hackers have infected over half a million routers and storage devices across two dozen countries. This malware infection is in preparation for a future cyber attack.

The Ukraine internal state security service, SBU, said that the activity showed that the Russian government was preparing for a large-scale cyber attack ahead of the Champions League soccer final. The game will be held in Kiev on May 26.

Cisco Has Investigated Cyber Attack Threat

The IT firm Cisco Systems Inc. has investigated the threat for several months. It has concluded that the Russian government is behind the infection campaign.

Cisco has specifically warned about “mechanisms that the malware uses to hide communications with hackers and a module that targets industrial networks like ones that operate electric grids.”

Russia denied the assertion from Cisco and the government of Ukraine.
